We all work around our farms and ranches every day without giving too much thought to the hazards which may surround us. I was surprised, for example, to find that farming is one of the most hazardous professions in which a person can engage. Accordinly, this month's topic is going to concern safety while working with farm animals.
Farm Safety Tips
- Take your time; be gentle with your animals. Rushing through tasks contributes to many needless injuries. It can also lead to lower quality care for your animals. Don't raise your voice or strike the animals. Most farm animals are larger and far stronger than we are (even our beloved goats). Use the animal's herding instinct, rather than force, to move him or her. I've found that bribes can be quite useful, and routine is a" many splendered thing."
- Properly train children and inexperienced workers before allowing them to work around the animals. Knowing where NOT to be is as important as knowing where to be at any given time.
- Be alert at all times. Even animals that are usually docile can react unpredictably when placed in stressful situations or when they're protecting their territory or offspring. Particularly remain vigilant around the buck during the breeding season.
- Provide safe and adequate animal-handling facilities and equipment. Many farm accidents involving animals occur in or around handling facilities.
- Leave yourself a quick way out when working in close proximity to animals, especially in confined quarters. Always be aware of your position in the pens relative to that of your animals.
- This should go without saying. However - breed gentle animals. Gentle animals can be every bit as productive and beautiful as those that are "mean as sin".
Remember: Animals, like people, are aware of hunger, thirst, pain, fear, illness, and abuse. Treat them with respect!!! Properly caring for animals, understanding their behavior, and providing safe handling facilities will eliminate much of the risk of injury to them and you. Common sense and kindness go a long way.
